Otto Von Dangers guide to surviving the Zombie Apocalypse Chapter 1 Part 1

 CHAPTER One PART One

It was hot summers day, a year and a half into the Covid-Pandemic. The world is in decline, a state of evil and greed. Backed by bigotry and hate, society is collapsing before my eyes. Climate Change is here and it is devastating our planet. Yet they still did nothing to stop it. A few meaningless gestures postponed to a future that won't exist. So I've decided to put my many years of knowledge of war, policy, building and survival on paper for those few that would listen.

The First thing I need to stress is I picked the Zombie Apocalypse as more a metaphor than an actual  threat as most of the tips and skills I will share will guide you through a host of bad situations. Such as civil war, earthquakes, giant forest fires, economic collapse, mass migrations and many more.

The things that will save you above anything else are situational awareness, Information and the will to survive. Lets look at how that would work during a Zombie outbreak.

The first thing most people think to do when attacked or threatened is to run in a panic or blindly attack. This rarely works out in any situation. But that is the "lizard brain" reactions. So a million cars are jammed up on the roads turning into a mass migration. Easy prey for a zombie horde and will fill their numbers quickly. The few brave folks that try to blindly attack the zombies will also grow the numbers of zombies as they have no information on how to effectively kill or stop them yet. In the movies it's always take out the head...but what if that's not the case. What if they are more like classic zombies that need to be hacked to pieces and burned. Or something entirely different. You don't know. And that's the problem. So I would secure food and water and weapons in and defendable place that can remain un-noticed.  Make sure you have multiple escape routes. Then wait for the mass migration to move out, avoiding them and their path of chaos and destruction. Every large group of humans migrating is a threat to everything living in their path. The will eat and loot everything they can get their hands on. Law and Order will be completely gone. Mob rules. The small towns and farmers won't stand a chance either so if you are rural the same rules apply. Gather supplies and hold out until they pass. Ration right from the start. there maybe no resupply for some time. Eventually the migrating horde will be attacked and turned to zombies or die in the Chaos.

When this happens it's time to start your recon. You need information. Observe the Zombies. Watch for strengths, weaknesses and patterns. Also scout for food and water sources. Water purification tablets and filters are good to have on hand but even so or in their absence look for running water and boil it first. If you are in a group have one person test it first...no matter how thirsty you all are. If it's tainted badly enough boiling doesn't work it's better to lose one than the whole group. Plus you'll be able to tend to that person. Same goes with food of unknown or wild sources. If you find canned food cool. You know it's good but a deer you kill, may have a disease or a fruit or vegetable you've never had before maybe toxic. If your solo. Drink or eat a very small amount to see if there is a bad reaction.

When doing a recon on the enemy, stealth is the key. The most important thing. if your spotted or heard you will have to fight against an enemy that out numbers you greatly and you know little about on their turf. Use camouflage suitable to the terrain and environment. Make sure you silence you gear. Metal on metal is a dead give away. So tape/tie down your gear and test it, move around, jump and run. Anything making noise must be silenced or removed. Make sure all reflective surfaces as covered. Glass, metal or anything that reflects light...even a scope on a rifle. Smell. Make sure you aren't stinking or perfumed. No smoking either both the sell and the smoke will give you away. Travel down wind of the zombies at least until you determine if they can smell or not.

The next keep to a successful recon is patience. Move slow and deliberate. Observe the enemy for a long time so you can gather the proper information from a safe distance. Again look for patterns in the behavior and responses, strengths above the obvious and of course weaknesses. If 5 thousand zombies walk by you...stay put...have patience. Yes it's scary...yes you'll want to flee. Don't, If you bolt they will know your there and you probably won't survive. Record your observations to compare notes. Also in case you do fall...someone else may find that info and use it. If you see something of note...don't get excited and rush off. There is more info to be gathered.

One you've reconed enough to know what your truly dealing with it's time to make plans and start fighting back.

                                                      To be continued...

    1. That depends on a few factors. Number one your skill level with a gun. Never have your finger on the trigger when climbing or doing something that could make you fall, trip or clench. Uneven terrain especially at night could make you trip and misfire for example. On Recon you should never have too as your are not seen, heard or smelled. To highly trained people their finger is the safety. All others should rarely do it if ever and should also use the actual safety.

    2. and my finger is NOT on the trigger in this photo. Even though the gun is unloaded...this is a fire range so extra caution is used.
